And the list goes on and on....

This has been such a productive and successful school year.  Thank you again for all of your support and cooperation.

Student Written Class Update

This week's class blog update was written by 5 wonderful boys!

Science Update by James:  The chicks are finally in the incubator and should hatch in a few weeks. Everyone is very excited to see the baby chicks. We are also doing work related to the development of the chicks such examining photos and responding to questions on a Chick Google Classroom. Once the chicks hatch they will be returned to their rightful owners. We hope that all the chicks hatch!

Writing Update by Jared: This writing unit is called "Writing Behind The Photo".  We all brought in a family photo to write about. Everyone described what happened before, during, and after the photo. Using Google

Drive, we typed a draft of our before, during, or after story. Our next steps will be to revise, edit, publish and share our stories with the whole class! We are all so excited! 

Field Trip Update by Zachary:

We just had an amazing field trip to The Long Island Science Museum. Each class had 2 activities to do. It was so much fun! The 2 activities were learning about animals(mammals and cold blooded animals) and learning how to use a compass. We went on a scavenger hunt using the compasses. There was a card every time we got to the place we needed to get to. The card always said turn the dial to something degrees and take a certain amount of paces. Each pace is equal to 2 steps. If the card said 26 paces north then we would take 52 steps north. At the end of the hunt we found treasure. It had 1 doubloon and 1 stamp for each student in this class. Then we went inside to see the animals. The women that taught us about the animals was very nice. We saw a turtle, snake, lizard, bunny and tortoise. It was the best field trip ever!

Reading Update by Evan:  In our fantasy unit so far, we have been studying elements of fantasy. We started a new fantasy book called Spiderwick Chronicles. From the few chapters we have read, some kids think the book is creepy and some kids not so much. The class really likes the book. We are keeping track of the elements of fantasy by using a bookmark that has the elements of fantasy listed on it. Here are the elements: 

1) TALKING ANIMALS OR OBJECTS 

2) MAGICAL POWERS 

3) MEDIEVAL OR MYTHICAL ELEMENTS   

We hope you have learned more about the unit in reading we are doing.  

Technology Update by John: We have been doing some fun things in computer lab. We created fake text messages between two main characters from a book we chose! We each picked one of our independent books and pretended the main characters were talking to each other. We all went on a website to create text messages. We made up what the characters would be saying to each other to give some details about the book and prove our understanding of the book. Everyone liked it a lot. We printed the texts out on paper and hung them around the room. It really looked like a texting screen. Everyone said it was fun!

Some exciting news!

Update

We are pleased to announce that Ms. Patronaggio will be our new classroom aide.  A few changes had to be made and Ms. Dougherty joined a 5th grade classroom.  We will miss her, but will still see her around the building.  Ms. Patronaggio is eager to join us and get to know the students.  She started with us right after the Spring break and has fit right in.  Welcome to Team M&M, Ms. P!  

Math

We have been making math review fun with Mr. Prinzevalli.  We played Jeopardy and even got to buzz in our answers and compete as teams.  The kids had a blast!  

Writing

This writing unit we published our poems digitally.  We used the App TouchCast to record the children reciting their poems that they wrote.  We had the chance to watch each other's  videos and comment.  Click on the following link to check out our videos.  Feel free to leave a comment on our class blog!

Reading

In classroom 14, Team M+M we are starting a new unit. The new genre is Mystery! We are starting a new class novel Nancy Drew And The Clue Crew April Fools Day.

Nancy and her best friends Bess and George, got a letter with no return address. When they opened the envelope it was a report card. Could this be a prank? When they kept looking, it said ……. APRIL FOOL’S DAY! It was from April Funk. A new student in Nancy’s school, who is having an April Fool’s Day Party. We are looking forward to finding out what happens in the mystery!

Genius Hour

In classroom 14, we are making all different projects in Genius Hour. We are making videos, poster boards and  PowerPoints. We are making a Google Doc for pictures, videos and websites to help us. We will bring in some things from home and that will help us make our projects. For example, some children have chosen to research how to make charm bracelets, slime and how to draw a comic strip.   

Music

In music, we are getting  ready to practice for our recorder concert on May 7, 2015. Our music teacher is Mrs. Hussey. Some  of our songs are Merrily We Roll Along and our new song is Juba. Some people are taking the NYSSMA test which is New York state school association and it is annual every year.

Art

In art, we are doing linear art and painting in water color. That is when we draw a picture and add patterns to our drawing and then we paint in water color. For example, some kids are drawing beaches, space and the Eiffel Tower.

Class Update!

A Peek Into Room 14:

Reading:  February is Love to Read Month.  As a class, we are participating in the ConnectED Bingo Challenge that was created by Mr. Sinanis and other administrators across the country. Some of the reading challenges that we have taken on include reading with buddies from another class and writing a poem based off of a wonder.  We are looking forward to writing book reviews and recording mock interviews between characters in our books. Some of the children have even independently taken on the challenge and are working on a bingo board at home.  This has been a fun way to integrate technology and foster a love for reading!  Thank you Mr. Sinanis for sharing your work with us!   

      

Math- We just finished up the bar modeling unit and are diving right into learning about fractions. We are looking forward to using fraction bars, making fraction kites, playing fraction games and integrating some fun apps/websites.  The children will learn how to plot fractions on a number line, order fractions from least to greatest and find equivalent fractions.  Thank you for sending back Edition A of the Math In Focus textbook.  Edition B has been sent home to help with the upcoming units.

A Peek Inside Room 14

Reading: We have started our class novel, which is Beezus and Ramona.  To get excited about reading this book we watched the book trailer and an interview with Beverly Clearly. Throughout reading the novel we have been stopping to monitor for meaning and practice several different skills such as making inferences, cause & effect and character perspective.  We have also started to practice how to respond to a question about the text and provide text evidence to support our opinions.  The children are already loving the book because most of us can relate with having a "pesky" younger sibling!  












Technology:  We have incorporated the use of Google Classroom into our daily teaching and learning.  The children are using this tool to enhance the nonfiction writing unit and Brazil social studies unit.  This is a place where the teachers create assignments and the assignments are handed in digitally.  It allows the children to collaborate on projects and receive feedback on their work. The children are visiting different digital databases to take notes on their topic, learning how to write an informative essay and working together to create a newspaper page.  We are looking forward to digitally sharing their final pieces with you!
